Mrs. Brier’s English Class Policies and Grading

briera@lcmrschools.com

Welcome back to LCMR class of 2018! To be successful in my English class this year you will need to bring the following items to class by Monday, September 11, 2017.

A 1 inch binder with college ruled filler paper.

200 3x5 index cards

A marble composition book

A pen or pencil every day.

You will need to bring your journal, a pen or pencil, your binder and whatever reading assignment we are working on to class every day.Back packs, purses and bags of any kind are not permitted on desks, laps or in walkways. They must fit under your desk.

The following are basic classroom rules that you will be expected to follow every day until the end of the school year in addition to standard school policies.

Attendance

It is extremely important that you are in class every day that we meet. If you must be absent from school and you are aware of this in advance please see me no later than two days before your expected absence so I can provide you with the work you will miss. If you are sick or have an unexpected absence you are required to see me as soon as you return to school to receive the work you missed. No matter what the reason for your absence may be it is YOUR responsibility to find out what you missed. You will be held accountable for ALL work missed. You will have one school day for every day you were absent to make up your work.

Tardiness

You must be in class BEFORE the bell rings. If you are late to class you must have a pass from the teacher, counselor or administrator that detained you. If you do not have a pass three times, you will be written up.

Homework

It is imperative that you complete all of your homework when it is due. If you do not complete your homework it will not only affect your homework grade, but also your participation grade. If you did not complete the assigned reading on time you cannot participate in class discussions which will negatively affect your grade. Plagiarized work will be given a zero. I only accept late homework if you have left it at home. You must turn in the assignment the next school day regardless if you have my class or not. I will not accept a homework assignment at the end of the class period.

Class Work and Class Participation

You will be expected to participate in class discussions and complete all class work assignments. Your participation counts towards your final grade. All plagiarized work will be given a zero.

Tests, Quizzes, Essays, and Projects

In order to be successful in this class you must complete all tests, quizzes, essays and projects. If you are absent when a test or quiz is given you must see me and set up a time either during a study hall or after school to make up the test. You will be expected to complete the makeup test or quiz in a timely manner (within a week). Remember, I will not chase you down. It is your responsibility to seek me out.

All formal essays and projects will be expected to be headed according to MLA format.

Your name

Mrs. Brier

12 CB English

Date (Day/Month/Year)

Journal Entries

All journal entries are to be recorded in the journal you provide. If you forget your journal you are to respond to the topic on a sheet of loose leaf paper. Be sure you staple your response into your journal as soon as you can. All entries are to be dated, numbered, and written in complete sentences. I should be able to determine the topic of the journal entry by your response. In addition, all responses are to be written in cursive. If you do not follow these guidelines it will affect your journal grade.

Late Assignments

All assignments are to be completed on time. I understand that once in awhile things may happen that are BEYOND YOUR CONTROL and you may not have a chance to complete your homework on time. If this happens you are to see me IMMEDIATELY! Long term assignments such as essays, research papers and all projects are expected to be in class the day they are due. LONG TERM ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE PENALIZED 15 POINTS FOR EVERY DAY THEY ARE LATE. THEY WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AFTER 2 DAYS.

Passes

In order to leave my room you must have YOUR passbook. You will not be permitted to leave if you do not have YOUR passbook. You may leave the room during the first five minutes, the last five minutes of the period or while working independently. Do not ask to leave during any other time during the period especially during teacher instruction.

Cell Phones

I only allow cell phone use in my classroom on rare occasion. If you are caught with using your cell phone during class, without my permission, I will take your phone and you will be written up. THIS IS YOUR WARNING!!

Grading

Your grade is broken down into the following categories:

Essay/Journals 30%

Homework 10%

Test 50%

Participation 10%

Many homework and class work assignments will be given a letter grade. If you do the minimum required of you on any assignment you will receive a C. Remember, a C is average. In order to receive an A or B you must go above and beyond what is required of you.

Be sure you are checking Power School regularly so that you are aware of your grade. Extra credit assignments will be offered throughout the year.
